2023 Hyundai Palisade: No hybrid or electric power planned for this generation

The updated Hyundai Palisade will need to wait until the next generation model comes in a few years before it has the choice of hybrid or electric power.

The Hyundai Palisade family SUV is not expected to adopt hybrid or electric in its current shape, because the older base that supports this model cannot easily handle the future technology.

When asked about the possible introduction of hybrid, plug-in hybrid or electric power for the Hyundai Palisade, Hyundai Australia's top product manager, Andrew Tuitahi, told Australian reporters "not in this generation".

Instead, the current model Palisade will in the meantime continue with its standard 2.2-litre turbo diesel all-wheel-drive and 3.8-litre gas V6 front-wheel-drive choices – both backed by an eight-speed automatic gearbox.

Any type of electric power for the Hyundai Palisade will need to wait for the next generation model change coming in about three or four years.

The all-electric Hyundai Ioniq 7 – a bigger SUV twin to the just-released Hyundai Ioniq 5 – is due on sale in Australia by the end of 2023, though exact timing is yet to be formally announced.

While the look of the Hyundai Ioniq 7 has been revealed the brand's Seven concept, Drive knows the showroom versions is set to be unveiled by the middle of next year.

A fuel-saving hybrid version of the Hyundai Santa Fe – which used a similar engine to the Kia Sorento Hybrid – is due to arrive in Australia by the end of this year.

The Hyundai Santa Fe changed to a newer base in 2020, which allows the addition of a hybrid engine.

This later design also supports the Kia Sorento, Kia Carnival and Kia Sportage, along with the Hyundai Staria van and Hyundai Tucson SUV.

In comparison, the Hyundai Palisade continues to use the previous-generation base, which the company says is less fit for electrification.
