Volvo S90 To Go Electric To Take On BMW i5
In May 2024, the production version could be released.
Leading the charge in the company's electrification transition is the EX30, a new generation of crossover EVs from Volvo. According to Teknikens Varld, the Swedish carmaker has already begun work on a prospective electric sedan successor for the Volvo S90 as part of the "top secret" V551 project, even though all eyes are focused on the zero tailpipe emission automobiles. A workplace picture that was released shows Volvo workers celebrating the achievement.
The source suggests that the S90 successor may be known as the ES90. But, this may cause problems for Lexus in terms of utilizing the ES brand, so if the production model is released, we might see a new name.
As a pre-series model, the ES90 has already rolled off the Chinese assembly line and will be put through testing and development. The first new worldwide model for the company is reportedly being developed by an engineering team in Shanghai, which is home to Volvo's research and design center.
The ES90 may use the same engine choices as the Volvo EX90 and Polestar 3, since all models are built on the same chassis. This contains a 111 kWh battery that can provide a range of up to 300 miles. However, the sedan variant ought to go further between charges since it has a lighter vehicle body type.
Power for all four wheels is provided by the Volvo EX90's twin-motor arrangement, which can provide up to 496 horsepower and 671 lb-ft of torque.
According to reports, the ES90's dimensions are 60.9 inches in height, 76.6 inches in width, and 196.5 inches long, with a wheelbase of 122.1 inches. The electric replacement's wheelbase will likely be longer than that of the existing S90, allowing it to combine a larger interior with a lower overall size.
The timing is ideal for Volvo to increase the number of electrified sedans in its inventory, since competitors in the market, Mercedes-Benz and BMW, will soon be joining the midsize electric segment with the EQE and i5, respectively. The next Volvo ES90 is anticipated to go into production in China in May 2024.
